I'm not above admitting when I was wrong or giving someone who I've been critical of their due when they earn it. I've been hard on Matt Campbell and the Iowa State football program as a whole in recent months/years. I've called Matt Campbell the "Human Hype Machine" and accused Iowa State football's main goal at times to be "winning the offseason". I said I wouldn't believe anything or any hype that comes from Ames in the fall until results were actually produced on the field. There was hope of bowl games and .500 seasons this year but I wasn't going to buy in until results were actually shown on the field.
We got some results on Saturday; and they came in a grand fashion. I thought the bell-water game for the Cyclones was last Thursday against Texas at home in Ames. If they could win that one, in primetime, I was going to start believing a little bit. That seemed like a game that a bowl eligible team should win. When they lost that, I had 4-8 tabbed for Iowa State's final record in 2017.
Then out of nowhere, Iowa State travels to Norman without their starting quarterback and knocks off the 3rd ranked team in the nation. Unbelievable. Granted, Oklahoma has a history of losing games every year they should win. I think this was something like their 7th straight year or something like that where they have lost to a team they were favored by double digits heading into the game. Don't quote me on that but it's some crazy statistic like that that I am unable to recover right now. But they were favored by 31 points coming into their game on Saturday against the Cyclones. THIRTY ONE!!!!
So hats off to Matt Campbell, that's a big time win for him and what he is trying to build at Iowa State. On top of that, if he could pick any team in the conference to play this Saturday to build upon this momentum I would have to guess that it would be Kansas at home. That is as close to a layup win as the Cyclones can get in the Big 12. A win would put them at 4-2 on the year, a definite building block for their program.
So congratulations again to Matt Campbell and his entire staff. Maybe they are on the right track and could be leading this team in the right direction. And hell, maybe they can make a bowl game this year. I didn't believe it when the season began but I'm starting to buy into the hype again. Which as any Cyclones fan will tell you, is a terrible idea.
Stumbled across this tweet today regarding the 2020 Presidential Election. It gives the current betting odds for who will win the 2020 Presidential Election. Now I don't know how reputable this website actually is or what type of accuracy they actually have in these types of things but I do respect the guy who tweeted the link out so I'd assume it's at least somewhat reputable. And forget about the percentages for President Trump being re-elected or who the leading candidates are for the Democratic party to run against presumably President Trump in 2020. I want to look at the people with the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th best odds right now.
Here are those four individuals, in order:
6. Mark Zuckerberg
7. Dwayne Johnson
8. Oprah Winfrey
9. Michelle Obama
Are you fucking kidding me?
I realize it's a long ways out from November 2020, a LONG WAYS out. But for those four people to be the sixth through ninth most likely candidates to win the Presidential Election in 2020 is ridiculous. It's appalling. It's disgraceful. It's embarrassing. It's a mockery.
And it makes complete sense.
After making a reality television billionaire our President in 2016 none of those options seem unlikely. This is where we are in our society in 2017. Four of the people considered most likely to win our next Presidential Election are a social media creator, a professional wrestler, a talk show host, and a former First Lady.
We, as a society, deserve what we get at this point. If this is what we consider normal for a political election for the highest office in our nation, then we deserve what we get. We got it in 2016 and we are on the way to get it again in 2020.
The big 808 Invitational is finally this weekend. Saturday, October 14th. Race times start at 5:00 PM. Feel free to come whenever you'd like, we'll have some football games on during the day and some other entertainment if you'd like. I probably won't provide much food other than snacks and appetizers and that type of stuff, so eat before you come or bring something to eat on your own if you'd like.
Providing that my trophy guy comes through in time, the winner will receive a prestigious trophy for their victory. My trophy guy wasn't sure if he could get it to me in time after giving him such short notice, but thought I would have a trophy in my hands by Saturday. So hopefully we are racing for some high stakes on Saturday night.
If you know you are coming for sure, feel free to tweet us and let us know. If not, feel free to come in on Saturday unannounced. We'll pick for pools and seedings as people arrive on Saturday.
If you have any other questions, just let us know and we'll try to answer them. If not, hope to see many of you there on Saturday night.
