Saw this story pop up on my Twitter timeline yesterday. Apparently, United Airlines barred three women from boarding their planes because they were wearing leggings, which do not meet their flying guidelines. They were forced to either change pants, cover them up, or not fly. Sounds like 1 covered up with something else and the other two did not fly. As you can imagine, this became a thing on Twitter.
Twitter users were outraged that United Airlines were deeming what was acceptable and unacceptable for women to wear, while others posted pictures of themselves in leggings and tagging United Airlines asking if this was appropriate for them to wear. United issued a couple statements and tried to clear themselves of the matter. Also important to note, I think I read in a different article that the passengers that were banned for their attire were also passengers that were riding for free because of some family connection or business connection...so they may have had different guidelines to follow than regular paying customers. I'm not sure.
Regardless, people on Twitter freaked out. People on social media said it was indecent of UA to stop those women, it was sexiest, it was dumb, it was a lot of unpleasant things. And I'm not going to get too deep into that argument here. I'm sure United Airlines has the right to enforce whatever guidelines they want to put into place and will also have to deal with the dissatisfaction that will cause some of their customers. And, pleasing customers is a big part of their goal I'm sure.
What I will say is that maybe this ship has already sailed but we as a society have done a poor job of deeming what is socially acceptable to wear in public. I'm not saying these leggings were or were not appropriate, I haven't seen any pictures of the attire yet. But I will say as a high school teacher, there are a lot of outfits that both males and females wear to school on a daily basis that make you scratch your head at times. That make you think "Their parents let them out of the house wearing that?"
It's the classic, where do you draw the line argument. How short is too short? How tight is too tight? How graphic is to graphic? It's tough. When you ban one thing, it opens the argument for banning so many other things. I think we've gotten to the point in our society where it's basically a free for all on what you want to wear in public. And that's probably not a great thing.
I'm the coach of a high school girls tennis team and a standing tradition the program had before I got there was to have a Karaoke Night at the previous coach's house during the season as a team-bonding night. That was a tradition I carried over when I took over the program and that night is tonight.
So singing karaoke to a group of high school girls isn't exactly in my wheelhouse but I've gotten by the past couple years. I'm struggling to pick out a song to sing though. I'd like something that's upbeat and brings the house down obviously, but I just can't find the right song. I've had a couple in mind but then once I screen them there's either curse words in them or references to alcohol or something. More than you'd imagine actually.
My first year I went with Ice, Ice Baby. The second year I went with Party in the USA. So the bar's been set pretty high. Not sure I can clear it tonight but would like to at least get in that vicinity. If anyone has any suggestions for a song selection, I have a thread going on my Facebook page but you can also comment on this article with your choice or tweet me at @808thoughts. All help appreciated!
Shane McMahon vs. AJ Styles
Well it's WrestleMania and Shane McMahon which means the real question in this match is what crazy spot is Shane going to try and pull off? Going into his WrestleMania match last year the obvious choice was jumping off of the Hell in a Cell structure, you just didn't know if he would actually do it or not....and he did. This year, I can't see an obvious spot.
This match hasn't been made into a No-DQ or Street Fight type of match yet either but I could see that happening on SmackDown this week. Shane is a much better performer when he has those type of weapons and props at his disposal. And I'm assuming this match get 15-20 minutes on the card so I think that addition would help Shane put on a show with AJ.
For the result, I think it would be the wrong way to go but I'm thinking they have Shane McMahon win. I'm not sure why but my Spidey-senses are thinking that all of this is leading to AJ heading to RAW eventually. With AJ teasing that he'd quit SmackDown or have himself fired, I get the impression that maybe this whole feud is leading to AJ leaving the Blue Brand. And maybe even if he does it's not right after WrestleMania and they teased it out a month two but I think that's where it's heading. I'm hoping I'm wrong since I think AJ is great on SmackDown and he can be the face of that show and would worry about him getting lost or caught up in McMahon drama on RAW. But I think to put those wheels in motion, somehow AJ gets screwed over in this match to lead to him getting pissed at SmackDown.
Winner: Shane McMahon
