I believe tonight is finale night for The Bachelor. If not, I'll just copy and paste this to next Monday's Three Count. We are finally done to the last two: Vanessa and Raven. All season I've really liked Vanessa but was hoping she wouldn't win just since Nick is a douchebag and I didn't want her associated with him. I think that dream is over though. If I was placing percentages on the winner, I'd say Vanessa has like an 80/20 chance of winning tonight....and that might even be too low.
Nick has had a strong connection with Vanessa from the start and Raven has been a late blooming relationship. In a short show like the Bachelor I think that's hard to overcome. I mean they shoot the entire season in what, 7 weeks? Here's actually my conspiracy theory type thought on Raven making the Final Two anyways....she's there because Nick didn't want to make others he had a stronger relationship with (Rachel, Corinne, Kristina) be the one left at the alter on finale night.
Think about it. Nick has been almost allergic to Rose Ceremonies this season. He's only done them if it's absolutely necessary past the first couple weeks. Instead, he sends them off on one-on-ones or pulls them aside on their own. He's been left at that Final Two alter twice and I don't think he wanted to put any of the other three through that so he sent them home early. He knows he has to do it with someone though so he's been bringing around Raven. Raven is great and probably the star of the show (sorry Corinne) but even she probably knows her chances of winning are pretty low. That could hopefully make the losing easier.
Does Vanessa accept the Final Rose though? Wouldn't that be such a Vanessa thing to do, to not accept the engagement at the very end? Vanessa thinks a lot about Vanessa and I could see her winning on her own terms but not take the engagement. I assume there is a way she can accept the Final Rose but hold off on the engagement....maybe that's even been done in the past. I just can't see Vanessa saying yes to an engagement right away and sitting on the couch tonight with Chris Harrison and say they are planning their wedding together right now.
Are they even together still during tonight's After The Final Rose show? I could see them (or Nick and Raven) not even being together still. If they are, I'd guess either couple is broken up by the 4th of July. Neither connection seems like a strong relationship. Maybe Vanessa would without the family ties in Canada but that almost seemed like a deal breaker. As always though, the After The Final Rose show tonight should be more entertaining than the actual finale.
The brackets were finally announced last night the big story was.......
IOWA GOT A 1 SEED IN THE NIT !!!!!!!
I kid, I kid. The real big story coming out of the Selection Sunday show seemed to be, as it often is, weird seeding amongst many teams. You had the regular debate amongst which teams should get the 1 seed but many teams seemed mis-seeded this year, specifically for us Midwest folk. Those Big Ten seeds were just....weird.
But in the committee's defense, the Big Ten does this to themselves with their unbalanced scheduling. It really makes it pretty tough to compare teams in a conference that play such a different conference schedule. And I'm not sure what the solution is but it even makes winning conference championships a little less prestigious in my eyes because it could have just as much to do with who you were scheduled to play that year as to how good you actually were. Between teams that are similar, the schedule dictates quite a bit.
So do I think Wisconsin got hosed on their 8 seed? Yeah, of course. But I'm not going to lose my mind about it either. They really struggled down the stretch and had no real quality wins prior to March to hang their hats on. Their resume really wasn't great and the perception of the Badgers was probably a little inflated due to the Big Ten being down. An 8 seems REALLY low, but what can you do?
What did bother me was the 1-68 seed list the committee put out. I'm fine with you saying the Big Ten was garbage so Wisconsin gets an 8 seed but don't put out the seed list and tell me there was that much separation between Big Ten teams though. Come on. Just put Purdue a couple spots higher than the rest of the league and put the other six teams in the 28-38 range. Just one big clump of Big Ten teams....because there wasn't much separation there. I mean, a group of people watched a lot of basketball this year and came up with the conclusion that Minnesota was the 18th best team? Ok. Maryland was the 23rd? Um......
Anyways, the bracket's out which means it's time to look it over and make some selections. I'm sure I'll be posting my picks and some advice here later in the week.
