I hit my upset pick (Kansas State) yesterday in my Big 12 bracket....but lose my champion (Kansas). I don't know if you guys know a lot about picking brackets but it's tough to overcome when you lose your champion in the first round. Kinda ruins the whole thing.
Jamie Dixon has TCU trendy upwards quicker than I thought he would though. Maybe he had more athletes in the cupboard entering than I thought but the Horned Frogs have been competitive most of the conference season and knocked off the #1 team in the nation in a quasi-road game.
As fun as upsets are though, it kind of leaves for two uninspiring semi-finals games today in Kansas City. Not uncompetitive but I'm not sure how excited non-Big 12 fans can really get for an ISU-TCU or a Kansas St.-West Virginia matchup. I do think that's a small hit for the conference, especially when the ACC is putting on a Duke/UNC matchup and the PAC-12 gets a UCLA/Arizona game. Might be a little easier for fans to watch those instead of the K-State/West Virginia tilt.
First off I'm going to have to get this off of my chest before I can get any actual thoughts written down about the B1G Tournament:
NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT! NIT!
Couple hiccups in my Big 10 bracket as well. Still find it hard to believe Thad Matta lost to Rutgers, that's embarrassing. Even more embarrassing is me having Ohio State win not only one but two games in my bracket. Then I got so excited at the possibility of Wisconsin getting to play Iowa in the Quarters with the chance to keep them out of the NCAA Tournament I picked the Hawkeyes to beat Indiana. I did that even though I have a strict "Never pick the Hawkeyes in a non-NIT bracket". But I couldn't help myself and it screwed me over.
I do still have all four of my semi-final teams still alive in this bracket though. All four of the teams I picked had a double-bye and haven't technically played a game yet though but after losing my champion in the Quarters of my Big 12 bracket, I'll take what I can get.
Intriguing couple games in the Big 10 quarterfinals today though, at least in my eyes. Particularly those Michigan schools. The Wolverines are playing some really good basketball right now...."peaking at the right time" as they say. Playing against the top team in the conference today (Purdue) will be a good test for them and a good indication for me to see how much "Sleeper" stock I would want to buy of them in the NCAA Tournament.
And Michigan State's matchup against Minnesota will also be a good one to keep an eye on. We are roughly 60 hours away from Selection Sunday which means we are about 60 hours and 30 minutes away from millions of people across America getting ready to call Michigan State their "sleeper" pick in their brackets. You know it's coming. Lunardi had them as a 10 seed heading into yesterday's games. Assuming they would stay at a 10 seed, how many people are picking them to win that 7/10 matchup regardless of who the 7 seed would be? At least 75% right? You'd hear ad nauseam about Michigan State's "tough non-conference schedule" and how much they've "tested and prepared themselves" for March and how they're so "battle-tested". It makes sick just thinking about it. No matter who they play or what seed they draw in the NCAA Tournament, I'm picking against them out of spite. If you aren't in that boat though, you may want to watch how this game plays out.
And in other big bracket news, even though I didn't get a plug on this episode like I did on the previous pod the Flyover Sports Podcast announced their "Sports Personalities Bracket". It's a 32-person, March Madness style bracket of the top sports media personalities to see who truly reigns supreme. I've posted a picture of the bracket below.
Voting will take place on their Twitter feed @flyoversports_ so make sure you give them a follow to make sure you get in on the fun. Naturally, I have some thoughts on the seeding and some people on the Bubble who got snubbed by the committee but I will save those, along with my bracket, for another Three Count.
For now, here's the bracket. Look it over, fill it out, and let me know who you see in the Final Four.
