I broke down the NFL MVP race yesterday, so today let's tackle the first round of the playoffs this weekend. I'd like to get a separate blog post up sometime before Saturday about each one of these games, but for the time being let's just take a real quick look at who I'm taking in each. Spoiler: I'm taking the points in every game.
Oakland (+3.5) at Houston - Both these teams are not good. Houston hasn't been good all year and Oakland became not good when they lost Carr at QB for the year. When in doubt, I'll take the 3.5 points.
Detroit (+8) at Seattle - This one has backdoor cover written all over it to me. I think Seattle is up 10-14 points late and Stafford leads the Lions down for a late meaningless touchdown at the end of the game. Failed onside kick. Seahawks take a knee up 3 to 7 points.
Miami (+10) at Pittsburgh - It scares me a little bit that this line is so high, almost like Vegas is begging you to take the Dolphins...which is never a great side to play. But I just don't see how Pittsburgh beats anyone by double-digits. I know Miami isn't good but Pittsburgh hasn't shown me all year they deserve to lay 10 points in the playoffs. Too many points.
New York (+4.5) at Green Bay - Not only am I taking the points here, I'm also betting the money-line. I'm not buying Green Bay's six game winning streak to end the year instantly making them title-contenders. The Giants pressure Rodgers all game, the Packers offense is out of sync, and the Giants make enough plays to win.
So you're telling me, that Mexico isn't actually going to pay for a wall along their border that the United States wants to put up? What an unbelievable turn of events that I could not have predicted occurring.
One of President Elect Trump's major initial election promises was to build a wall along the Mexican border and then have Mexico pay for it. When pressed upon actual specifics, details, or plans of this seemingly impossible task his response was "Believe me". Not as detailed of a plan as I'd have liked but I guess that's all we were getting out of President Elect Trump. Apparently now I can't believe him?
Oh never mind. President Elect Trump sent out a tweet this morning saying that Americans will only have to initially pay for the wall before Mexico reimburses it for us after it's been built. Sounds like a solid and reassuring plan.
I know I'm in the minority here but I think you can build a solid basketball program at Nebraska. I know I'm probably also in the minority here but I really like Tim Miles. I know he can rub fans the wrong way and a lot of people were turned off by the tweeting at halftimes but I think you could to build a buzz about your program somehow. I'm not coming down too hard on a guy coming in to a dormant program with energy and passion and doing some things unconventionally.
I really thought about 2 to 3 years ago he had the program trending in the right direction. Nebraska made the NCAA Tournament in his second year and really had some momentum for their program. Then for whatever reason, the Huskers just collapsed after that, going 13-18 and 16-18 in the following two seasons leading into 2016-2017.
Maybe they are starting to get back on track this year. After their win against Iowa last night, they are currently 3-0 in the Big Ten with some pretty impressive wins. Wins at Maryland, at Indiana, and against Iowa is nothing to bat an eye at to start the season. I didn't watch any of their game last night but by mutliple accounts, their fans were engaged and had the Pinnacle Bank Arena rocking. I remember during one of Wisconsin's Final Four runs a couple years ago they had to travel to Lincoln and Nebraska had a big marketing campaign to get as many fans in the arena as possible, all wearing red, and trying to make as much noise all game as possible. I know it sounds ridiculous but I remember it being the toughest environment Wisconsin played in all year. I came away really impressed with their fans and program. So I think there is a fan base that will support them if they can build a program worth supporting. I hope Coach Miles is the coach to do it.
