As many of you are likely aware of, we don't have a professional sports team in Iowa. So we don't get the opportunity in Iowa to make sure we get tickets to the game when LeBron comes to town. Or when Tom Brady comes to town. Or when any other legendary sports figure comes to Iowa with their teams. We just miss out on that.
The closest we able to do is make sure you go to the game when a legendary or exciting college coach comes to town. Think of Bobby Knight coming to Iowa back in his day. Or Roy Williams. Or Norm Stewart. And while he may not have reach legendary status yet, Tosh Dillinger is one of the most exciting and promising coaches in sports today. So when I learned that Coach Dillinger and his 4th grade girls team would be playing in Huxley last weekend, I cleared the schedule.
I was only able to catch one game of the Comet Dillingers last weekend...a guy can only clear his schedule so much to watch someone coach basketball before his wife calls him an idiot. So I was able to catch their 2nd game in round robin play. My main takeaway from the game, Tosh Dillinger is the modern day Bo Ryan.
You could tell the girls were really solid fundamentally, a staple of Bo Ryan coached basketball teams. I saw some great cuts, some solid triple threats, even saw an off-hand layup by one of the players. No ball hogs on the team at all. You often see a lot of teams rely on one great player at this level and just let her shoot all the time. Not on the Comet Dillingers. Equal shots and a lot of passing, rather than dribbling. Bo woulda been proud.
Even down to style of play it reminded me of classic Badgers basketball. While the Comet Dillingers weren't running a Swing Offense per se, I saw a lot of cutting and moving the basketball from side to side. And when shots weren't falling and points were hard to come by, the Comet Dillingers relied on their defense to keep them in the game. The game I saw was a low-scoring, defensive-minded grind it out type of game. The Comet Dillingers always had a 3 to 7 point lead, and grinded out the 5 point victory. Just reminded me of a classic Big 10 slugfest.
While the Comet Dillingers ended up losing by 2 in the finals, you could see the foundation being set in place by Coach Ryan. I mean Coach Dillinger. A bright future could definitely be on the horizon for North Polk girls basketball. If Coach Dillinger and the Comets are coming to your town in the near future, block it out on your calendar. You're going to want to see them.
I'm sure we're going to talk a lot about The Royal Rumble in the Three Count this week. The best match in WWE all year takes place on Sunday and unlike most years, this year's field is wide open. Most years in recent memory, going into the Royal Rumble the winner is narrowed down to 2 or 3 people with a legitimate chance to win. With the winner going on to headline WrestleMania in a championship match, the underdog really doesn't have much of a chance to win....despite how much WWE tries to make you believe it true.
This year, however, I think you could talk yourself into 10 or 12 people that could realistically win the Royal Rumble. When you add in all the big names that are already entered into the Royal Rumble it's shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Royal Rumble matches of all time. When I was thinking about this yesterday and trying to determine who I thought would win the Royal Rumble, it occurred to me how little WWE is actually doing with The New Day.
In a year where the Royal Rumble is up for grabs, I don't see any scenario where a member of The New Day wins it. I wouldn't even call them threats to win it, which is mind-blowing when you think of it considering they have been one of, if not the best things going in WWE for over 20 months now. They are a faction that should theoretically dominant just due to strength by numbers, but they are a Royal Rumble afterthought.
I'll go one-step further, what are they going to do at WrestleMania? I tried figuring out my Mania card a couple weeks ago and I don't see a spot for them other than another multi-man tag match....which was beneath them last year and will be even more beneath them this year. But I can't find a way around it. It's time to either make them a real threat, or send them there separate ways. I've said for the past year that New Day should be the vehicle to get Big E into the main event scene. Or Kofi if you'd like to go that route but Big E feels like a better fit for me. The New Day wouldn't thrive in the main event scene? The main event scene wouldn't benefit from having The New Day in it. It's time to make a move with these guys.
I participated in our school's Student Council 4-on-4 co-ed basketball tournament last night. I was planning on giving you a detailed breakdown of my performance here but I'm going to glance over that quickly to get to the real breaking news. Our staff team put up a good fight going 2-2 on the night in the double elimination tournament but missing out on the championship game. Bigger news though.....I think I broke my foot in the process.
In what ended up being our final game of the night, I went to catch a pass on the perimeter and square up from deep because if I'm on the portion of the gym covered in wood I'm in range to shoot. As I'm pivoting to get into triple threat position like Coach Dillinger teaches his players, I feel a "pop" on the top of my foot. I was worried about rolling an ankle during the tournament because my basketball shoes were ruined in a sewer pump flood in our house this fall so I was playing in regular tennis shoes. The ankle was fine but the "pop" came on the top of my left foot right above the arch of the foot.
I finished the game off since I'm a gamer and didn't think much of it. Last night it started hurting more as the night went on and this morning I can hardly put any pressure on it. I think I'm going to have to go to the hospital tomorrow to get it checked out. Thought I could push it off but feeling more and more like a broken foot. Getting old is hard, even for #NaturalAthletes. I'll keep everyone updated on my health as the week progresses.
