Tough night for the Cyclones last night and Iowa State fans are not responding well. Taking a quick look at Twitter and Cyclone message boards make you think the world is coming to an end. Save that stuff for your political posts.
My point of view is that it was a big missed opportunity for Iowa State last night. The Cyclones are searching for a quality win this season that they can hang their hat on during Selection Sunday. I'm still not sure what Iowa State's best win is this year and I thought last night could be the night to solidify that.
I'm not as up in arms about last night's loss and many Cyclone fans appear to be. West Virginia went 10-21 on three-point attempts last night and 17-20 from the free throw line. Throw the rest of the stats out the window in my book, that's going to be tough to beat when you're playing a Top 10 opponent.
I thought Iowa State played well and was encouraged for most of that game. Iowa State didn't get handled on the glass like I thought they would, they handled the press adequately, and had the game tied or basically tied for a good part of that second half. Iowa State had some opportunities to take the lead but never could convert. Then there was about a 4-5 minute stretch where West Virginia hit shots and Iowa State missed open looks. All of a sudden it's a 10 point lead with less than 8 minutes or so to play. Ball game.
And if on cue, last night's loss let the "Bubble Talk" take center stage and really gain momentum for Iowa State. Let me put some Cyclones fans at ease here......they will be in.
I get the thought process to say they won't make the tournament and Iowa State should definitely be anxious on Selection Sunday this year but they will be fine. The bubble is really weak this year guys. You can't just take Iowa State out of the tournament, you also have to put someone else in the tournament in their place. There aren't a lot of quality teams on the outside looking in right now. Iowa State still has to play well down the stretch and can't tank but if they continue to play like they are they will be in the tournament. And this team has 4 seniors that play a lot of minutes who have been in big games and have experience in spades. The Cyclones will be fine. Breathe.
The Cyclones could really help their case by finding a signature win somewhere on their schedule still this year. I thought last night was there best opportunity, which makes the loss a little tougher to swallow. Saturday is actually another opportunity to do so when they travel to Kansas. I actually like having that game after two consecutive losses, could make the Cyclones a little desperate.
Faithful readers of this blog know that I am no fan of the current 2-party political system. I think it's hurting our government and just turning into a "Me vs You" battle on everything. You've probably been on social media and seen this yourself. It's rarely "Us" as Americans anymore, it's me vs. you.
This Supreme Court seat opening provides another great look at this. When President Obama announced his replacement nominee in Merrick Garland the Republican party immediately resisted it because they didn't like him. They refused to even take meetings on his appointment and planned on "indefinitely blocking" the move. Really glad to see us Americans working together on that issue.
And now that Donald Trump has announced his replacement nominee in Neil Gorsuch, you can see the Democrats lining up to do the exact same thing. I don't even know if they don't like Gorsuch but just think if the Republicans blocked their nomination then they should block the Republican's choice to make things fair. Just ridiculous.
This is a seat on the highest court in our nation and we have a political system that allows that seat to be remain open because two sides can't work together and agree on a nomination. This isn't about politics and the people, it's about power. It's ridiculous.
